Position: TPWD - Park Ranger I (Park Interpreter)

TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

State Park Interpreter leading engaging programs that showcase natural beauty, wildlife, culture and spark curiosity in every guest. Foster conservation values and build community connections through education and outdoor experiences.

RESPONIBILITIES
  • Develop and provide interpretive and educational programs with emphasis on stewardship and outdoor skills.
  • Conduct guided hikes, evening presentations, school programs, special events, virtual programming.
  • Assist with preservation, protection, operation, and management of the Longhorn and Bison Herds.
  • Support visitor services: operate gatehouse, camp and day use registration, license sales, visitor information.
  • Recruit, train and oversee volunteer program.
  • Post events on web calendar and social media channels.
  • Assist in maintenance of equipment, building and grounds.
  • Train new employees on interpretive topics.
  • Submit daily, weekly and monthly reports.
  • Work independently with good judgment and self‑motivation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education – Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

ExperienceNo experience required.

License – Valid class “C” Texas driver’s license within 30 days of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation with a bachelor’s degree in Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, Education, History or a related field.
  • Two years of customer service experience.
  • One year of interpretation or public speaking experience.
  • Experience in public program/event development, public relations, marketing and promotions including social media.
  • Experience with range management practices and animal husbandry.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Interpretive methods and techniques; general office, administrative and clerical procedures; general maintenance; basic mathematics; social media basics; livestock operations, large animal management, cultural and natural resource management.
  • Computer skills: MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Effective verbal and written communication; public speaking and presentations; interpretive writing; customer service; planning and supervising others; independent decision making; training others; posting social media content; operating livestock equipment; handling cattle and/or bison.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work in fast‑paced and stressful conditions, work independently or as part of a team, develop partnerships, represent the park positively, perform manual labor (lift up to 50 lbs), and comply with TPWD safety program.
