Bus Driver Substitute (25-26 School Year)
Base pay range: $20.80/hr – $20.80/hr.
Position title:
Bus Driver Substitute.
Exemption status:
Non‑exempt.
Reports to:
Transportation Manager.
Terms of employment:
As needed.
Hourly salary: $20.80/hr.
Primary PurposeSubstitute for bus driver and ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route or trip. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and other designated locations.
QualificationsEducation/Certification
- High School Diploma or GED, preferred.
- Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License with all school bus driving endorsements.
- Bus Driver Certification.
Special Knowledge/Skills
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass alcohol and drug test.
- Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
- Ability to operate bus.
- Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior.
Experience
- Experienced driver with clear driving record.
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures and complete required reports.
- Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
- Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Supervise students while boarding and exiting the bus and crossing the street, and ensure all students have exited the bus at the end of the route or trip.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
- Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior.
- Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
- Operate two‑way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Tools/Equipment:
School bus and vehicles; safety equipment such as flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher; two‑way radio; computer. - Posture:
Prolonged sitting; frequent climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting/crouching, crawling, pushing/pulling, twisting, reaching. - Motion:
Frequent repetitive hand motions, wrist flexion/extension. - Vision:
Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. - Lifting:
Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30–55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance. - Environment:
Work performed indoors, outdoors, and in bus; exposure to wet/humid conditions, hot/cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals; frequent in‑district travel; occasional statewide travel; occasional irregular/prolonged hours. - Mental Demands:
Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions.
