Presidio Center is seeking an adjunct professor to teach a graduate level course in Sustainable
Economics as part of the schools MBA in Sustainable Solutions degree program.

Department: Presidio Center for Sustainable Solutions at the University of Redlands

Location: Five days face-to-face on campus in San Anselmo, CA. Weekly evening webinars.

About this course

This course is a one-semester introduction to the fundamentals of managerial economics and macroeconomics. The first part of this course will cover basic economic tools, focusing on analysis at the margin, supply and demand theory, production theory, capital theory, profit maximization, pricing strategy, game theory, cost minimization, firm structure, and behavioral economics. Throughout the course we will be viewing economic frameworks and theories through a critical lens, and will incorporate issues of sustainability, climate change, and social justice.

The course is intended to contribute to these large program learning outcomes:

  • Apply whole systems thinking to orient strategies, activities, and organizations toward sustainable, and just solutions.
  • Integrate and apply business fundamentals and concepts of sustainability and inclusion to design, develop, and manage businesses that promote the common good.
  • Articulate the root causes of social, political, and economic inequity and ecological problems, and the government’s leadership role in ensuring the common good

Specific Course Learning Outcomes

As a result of this course, students will be able to do the following:

  • Conduct economic analysis using demand and supply, elasticity, marginal analysis, production and costs analysis, and capital theory.
  • Comprehend how these concepts are used in a business setting.
  • Describe different market structures including monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly, and how these structures affect management decision making.
  • Use basic quantitative approaches to decision making such as breakeven analysis, optimization, and risk analysis.
  • Describe the limitations of the neoclassical economic model, especially as it relates to sustainability and social justice.
  • Articulate the fundamentals of sustainable economics including valuing ecosystem services, and evaluating different policy interventions such as carbon taxes and cap and trade programs.
  • Conduct basic financial spreadsheet analysis using NPV, IRR, and other tools in Excel.
  • Position Summary

    Adjunct professors are responsible for delivering course materials in a learner-centered environment, engaging students in the learning process, and supporting their academic success. Responsibilities include developing and teaching course curriculum in accordance with our prescribed learning outcomes.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Prepare syllabi and develop curricula to meet course requirements and student learning outcomes.
    • Deliver engaging and effective instruction.
    • Provide timely and constructive feedback on assignments and exams.
    • Submit midterm and final grades, attendance records, and other required reports.
    • Communicate consistently with students, faculty, and administrators.
    • Attend two virtual faculty meetings
    Required Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in a related field.
    • Teaching experience in a relevant subject area.
    • Familiarity with online and remote teaching tools.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • PhD in a related field.
    • Experience teaching diverse student populations.
    Compensation

    Adjunct faculty are paid $9,000 for a 4 credit course.
