This role is Lead Senior Civil Engineer - Solid Waste Engineering in Texas (Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas).

About the Role

As part of the Civil Ground Engineering & Materials, Earth & Environment Team, you will lead project teams delivering services for civil and environmental engineering projects involving waste management facility design and permitting, stormwater management, landfill gas management, construction quality assurance, and operations planning. The position may require periodic overnight travel and fieldwork in Texas.

  • Managing and directing project design teams
  • Managing large projects in the Solid Waste Sector
  • Preparing engineering design reports
  • Managing and directing construction quality assurance programs
  • Pursuing and securing new project opportunities
  • Client interaction
  • Regulatory agency interaction
  • Preparing proposals
  • Mentoring junior staff
  • Providing proactive and strategic leadership for the civil engineering discipline and function
  • Leading larger-scale more complex civil engineering projects with budgets, timelines, and subcontractor oversight
  • Leading technical aspects of contract negotiation, presentations, and meetings
  • Supporting long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development of Civil Engineering work for WSP in the area
  • Responsible for profitable performance of projects and timely completion
  • Ensuring engineering discipline certifications and value proposition are developed and improved
  • Representing the engineering discipline to external entities including federal, state, and local agencies, clients, subcontractors, industry groups, government, and community entities
  • Developing and informing proposals and project scopes, timelines, pricing, and budgets
  • Interpreting and summarizing data, including reports and documents to support engineering and regulatory conclusions
  • Collaborating with professionals from multiple disciplines to provide trusted advisor services and future‑ready solutions for clients
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, conduct, and adherence to WSP’s Code of Conduct
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or related field with valid Texas PE registration
  • 10+ years of post‑education experience in civil engineering design
  • Experience in solid waste containment systems, permitting, landfill gas compliance, and fill sequence & master plans (experience in multiple areas preferred)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Ability to work independently and within groups
  • Strong leadership and positive work history
  • Excellent teamwork skills and interaction with public and client stakeholders
  • Engineer license required (multi‑state preferred)
  • Advanced proficiency in technical computations, engineering principles application, understanding plans and regulations
  • Independent leadership to mid‑level and senior teammates with strict QA/QC adherence
  • Tactical lateral thinking, strong analytical skills, attention to detail, prioritization in high‑pressure environment
  • Ability to secure cooperation from senior management, clients, regulators, and staff lacking formal hierarchy
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, anti‑drug and anti‑harassment policies
  • Strong adaptability to change and flexibility for varied schedules and hours
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required
