The Home Medical Equipment (HME) Delivery Driver is an entry-level position responsible for driving a box truck, delivering and picking up medical equipment, educating patients and caregivers, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while working independently in a fast‑paced team environment.

Responsibilities
  • Equipment Operation – deliver, set‑up, service and pick‑up medical equipment and related supplies to/from patients’ residences and skilled facilities.
  • Provide instruction and education to patients/caregivers on operation, cleaning and maintenance of medical equipment.
  • Confirm patient understanding through return demonstration.
  • Transport, handle and route medical equipment in accordance with VITAS Healthcare policies and infection‑control procedures.
  • Represent VITAS Healthcare professionally at all times.
  • Adhere to federal, state, local and professional guidelines and regulations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive information as required.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and non‑scheduled maintenance of equipment.
  • Train MST staff on high‑flow therapy, Bi‑PAP therapy and enteral pumps.
  • Complete performance safety checks on equipment at the time of delivery.
  • Participate in safety and patient assessments related to equipment within the IDT care plan.
  • Track equipment accurately using computer systems.
  • Provide initial general training to newly hired MST.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment as required.
Warehouse Operation
  • Clean, disinfect, test and repair medical equipment and maintain accurate records.
  • Receive, identify and label medical equipment.
  • Maintain proper storage and inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate inventory levels and communicate with HME staff.
  • Maintain oxygen refill files.
  • Perform overall warehouse cleaning and maintenance.
Safety
  • Practice proper body mechanics during transport, lifting and set‑up of equipment.
  • Adhere to all safety and security policies and procedures.
  • Wear safety‑toed shoes provided by VITAS Healthcare.
Vehicle Operation
  • Operate vehicles in accordance with VITAS Healthcare policies and OSHA, NFPA, FDA and DOT regulations.
  • Drive safely, responsibly and defensively.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and service records.
  • Load and unload equipment safely to prevent damage or injury.
Communication
  • Present equipment education clearly to patients/families.
  • Report equipment or patient issues to the immediate supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate records in compliance with VITAS Healthcare policies.
  • Assist less experienced drivers by providing guidance and counseling.
Professional Development
  • Attend and participate in company meetings and committees.
  • Complete all required training during the first year of employment as outlined in the career pathway.
Other
  • Perform on‑call work as required.
  • Maintain positive work relations with staff.
  • Provide internal training on home medical equipment to HME staff.
  • Demonstrate courteous behavior and responsiveness to patients, families and the public.
  • Perform additional duties as requested.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
  • Adhere to all VITAS Healthcare policies and procedures.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with operation and repair of durable medical equipment preferred.
  • Current driver’s license in the applicable state.
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds when required.
  • Highly organized.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • PC competent.
  • Able to work with hand‑held scanning device.
  • Work unsupervised in the field, exercising discretion and independent judgment.
