Wellness Coach – YMCA of Greater San Antonio
Join the team to support members in achieving their wellness potential through YMCA-approved programs. Under the direction of the Health & Wellness Director or Member Engagement Director, this role helps members set and reach long‑ and short‑term goals, fostering self‑management skills for sustained health behavior change.
Essential Functions- Track members’ performance and motivate continued membership and exercise adherence.
- Contribute to a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.
- Follow YMCA of the USA strength training and nutrition guidelines.
- Attend required training classes at YMCA of San Antonio.
- Promote the YMCA story with all program participants.
- Monitor all areas of the wellness center (group exercise studios, free weight, cardio, machines).
- Maintain clean centers and coordinate with cleaning staff.
- Follow accident reporting procedures and safety policies.
- Maintain risk‑management training and practices.
- Submit key indicator data and support goal achievement.
- Clean equipment as directed by supervision.
- Know and welcome members by name.
- Attend all required staff meetings (departmental and branch/assoc level).
- Assist co‑workers in other departments when needed.
- Teach and practice the five YMCA Character Development Values.
- Contribute to the Annual Partners campaign.
- Maintain certifications, meeting the YMCA continuing education requirement.
- Refrain from diagnosing injuries or dispensing commercial health products.
- Be actively engaged with members on the wellness floor and during group classes.

- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (highly preferred).
- 6 months to 1 year of experience in health and wellness.
- Knowledge of fitness research, program design, anatomy, physiology, exercise principles, and behavior change methods.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Hazardous Communications certification within first week.
- CPR, First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen certification within 60 days.
- Child Abuse Prevention training and safety trainings completed before first shift and annually thereafter.
- YMCA certifications (Principles of Healthy Lifestyles and Foundations of Strength & Conditioning) within 6 months.
- Fast‑paced wellness floor/office environment.
- Visual acuity needed for computer screens and documents.
- High alertness and concentration required.
- Repetitive stooping, bending, occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
- Ability to sit for long periods and stand for at least 1 hour during presentations.
- Ability to hear, speak, and understand the words of others; ability to manipulate keyboards, telephone keypads, and writing utensils.
