Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, responsible for assisting with the administration of targeted doses of radiation as prescribed by a radiologist in the treatment cancer and other diseases.
Responsibilities- Assists in preparing sealed radioactive materials, calculates actual treatment dosages, and prepares equipment such as immobilization, treatment and protection.
- Develops and administers patient treatment plans using radiation therapy techniques and radiopharmaceuticals; checks prescription, chart, calculations and patient identity.
- Ensures proper application and safety techniques are used.
- Checks machine alignment, lasers, interlocks, and beam/light field alignment and maintains daily records on machine; reports problems.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- Detail oriented.
- Must follow exact instructions and input exact measurements to make sure the patient is exposed to the correct amount of radiation.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Works closely with patients.
- It is important that therapists be comfortable interacting with people who may be going through physical and emotional stress.
- Physical stamina.
- Must be able to be on their feet for long periods and be able to lift and move patients who need assistance.
- Technical skills.
- Works with computers and large pieces of technological equipment; must be comfortable operating those devices.
EDUCATION:
- Associate's degree and graduate of AMA accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology is required.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
- Registered by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists in Radiation Therapy and licensed in Medical Radiological Technology by the Texas State Department of Health or eligible for licensure is required.
- As a condition of continued employment, all incumbents are required to attain a license in Medical Radiological Technology by the Texas State Department of Health within 180 days of employment.
