The Sedation Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for administering and monitoring sedation during Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE) procedures, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and optimal outcomes. The Sedation RN provides clinical support across the continuum of care, including collaboration with the recovery team, patient monitoring, and procedure room preparation. This role is critical to maintaining safe, effective, and patient-centered care within the interventional radiology clinic.

Position Supervises: None (may provide direction to Medical Assistants or support staff during procedures)
Degree of Supervision Provided to Position: Medium. Must be self-directed and works under the supervision of the Clinical Leader and Interventional Radiologist.
Education, Experience, and LicensureRequired
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience, in procedural sedation, critical care, and perioperative nursing.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) (active)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (active)
- Strong knowledge of sedation protocols, patient monitoring, and emergency interventions.
Preferred
- Experience in interventional radiology or outpatient surgical environments.
- Prior experience in urology, endoscopy, or outpatient procedural care strongly
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or advanced nursing degree.
Patients, families, Interventional Radiologist, Radiologic Technicians, Recovery Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other clinical staff. Must demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and teamwork in all interactions.
Job Requirements- Administer sedation medications under the direction of the Interventional Radiologist.
- Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs, airway status, and response to sedation.
- Recognize and respond immediately to complications, adverse events, or emergencies.
- Document sedation assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the EMR.
- Assist Recovery Nurses with patient monitoring, medication administration, and discharge readiness.
- Provide support during transitions of care before, during, and after procedures.
- Ensure continuity of care through effective communication with the care team.
- Respond to emergencies and initiate ACLS/PALS/BLS protocols as needed.
- Verify that the procedural and sedation consent forms are properly filed.
- Participate in morning huddles with the IR team to review cases, including allergies, comorbidities (e.g., renal insufficiency), and other relevant information.
- Prepare and maintain sedation-related supplies, medications, and equipment.
- Ensure adherence to infection control, safety standards, and medication handling protocols.
- Verify that emergency and resuscitation equipment is available and functioning prior to procedures.
- Monitor nursing inventory and check expiration dates regularly in collaboration with the Recovery RN and Lead MA.
- Collaborate with physicians, radiology staff, and nursing colleagues to ensure safe and efficient workflow.
- Support cross-functional clinical needs as assigned.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and coverage to other team members when needed.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff development.
- Provide accurate, timely hand-off reports and documentation.
- Adhere to facility attendance and punctuality policies.
- Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor.
