Job Summary andQualifications:
The Pediatric ECMO Coordinator Will function independently and collaboratively as an expert clinician, educator, consultant, and researcher in Extracorporeal Membranous Oxygenator (ECMO) Care. The ECMO Coordinator will coordinate the care of patients requiring ECMO and their families across the continuum of acuity in order to ensure consistent family-centered care. The ECMO Coordinator is dedicated to promoting optimal patient/family care by collaborating with all members of the Lung Rescue ICU and the Cardiovascular ICU Team to set best practices in patient care and staff practice standards according to evidence based guidelines.
The ECMO Primer must have equivalent qualifications, competence and function in the same role as employed individuals performing the same or similar services at the facility, as defined by facility job description
Essential Job Functions:
Directs care and education to hospitalized patients requiring ECMO and their families. Requires a sound knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and critical care nursing and or critical care respiratory therapy.
Assesses physiological needs of ECMO patients and psychosocial needs of ECMO patients/families. Works with the nursing staff in the formulation of nursing diagnosis, care planning, and assists the nursing staff in providing counseling and/or referral.
Assesses, plans, and implements or participates in educational activities/programs at the unit, service, department, and/or community level in area of ECMO care.
Communicates with medical, nursing, and other multidisciplinary personnel verbally and/or in writing any pertinent patient care information. This includes active participation and leadership in medical rounds for ECMO patients.
Identifies ECMO program needs; contributes to and assists with the development of or expansion of the ECMO program. Responsible for the maintenance and training of ECMO specific medical equipment.
Maintains current knowledge of ECMO procedures, techniques and research, and enhances his/her knowledge to improve professional growth and development. Develops content for formal teaching for both team orientation and staff development. This includes both didactic training lectures and practical water lab training.
Graduate of an accredited diploma, associates, or baccalaureate degree nursing program.
BSN with 2 years of ICU experience with ECMO preferred OR graduate of an approved Respiratory Therapy Program.
Two-year previous Respiratory Therapy experience preferred.
