Job Description & How to Apply Below

Are you detail-oriented, technically minded, and someone who takes pride in precise work? Do you enjoy working independently in the field, troubleshooting fiber issues, and helping keep a growing network performing at its best?

Idea Tek is looking for a Splicing Technician to support the construction, maintenance, and reliability of our fiber network throughout South Central Kansas. In this role, you'll perform fiber optic splicing, maintain accurate network documentation, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and complete maintenance and repair work across both aerial and underground infrastructure.

This position supports field operations throughout South Central Kansas and may require travel across Kansas and Oklahoma, including occasional overnight stays. Employees will also travel to our Buhler, Kansas office for training, meetings, or as required.

A Day in the Life

Throughout the day, you'll document your work, update schematics and spreadsheets, and coordinate with internal teams to make sure network records stay accurate. Some projects may also take you inside business locations to complete splicing or maintenance work as part of a larger network repair or deployment.

What You'll Do
  • Perform precise fiber optic splicing across Idea Tek's network in a variety of outdoor and field environments.
  • Read, maintain, and accurately update splicing schematics, spreadsheets, and network documentation.
  • Take detailed field and splicing notes to support accurate records and project timelines.
  • Maintain working knowledge of aerial and underground fiber network infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve fiber connectivity, network, and service issues.
  • Complete fiber maintenance and repair work from identification through resolution.
  • Perform splicing and related network work inside commercial and business environments as needed.
  • Test fiber connections and verify completed work meets Idea Tek quality and performance standards.
  • Provide a professional experience when interacting with customers, property owners, and other stakeholders in the field.
  • Follow established safety practices while working around aerial, underground, and active network infrastructure.
What We're Looking For
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in a field-based technical role (e.g., fiber splicer, telecommunications technician, line worker, low voltage technician, or cable installer).
  • Ability to differentiate colors accurately.
  • Valid driver's license with no restrictions.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in underground and aerial environments, including climbing ladders up to 32 ft.
  • Ability to enter and operate a bucket truck with a weight limit of 300 lbs.
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work an on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as regular Saturdays and/or Sundays.
  • Ability and willingness to travel across Kansas and Oklahoma as needed, including overnight stays of approximately 2–4 days.
What Will Help You Stand Out
  • Previous experience in the telecommunications or broadband industry.
  • Hands‑on fiber optic splicing experience.
