Job Summary

Under the Division of Student Affairs, and under general supervision from the Director of the Office of Black Student Success (OBSS), the Program Coordinator identifies and mentors students on routine matters using the African American Data Dashboard, Educational Advisory Board (EAB), and other methods to bring students in for services when needed.

The Program Coordinator supports OBSS by providing professional student services and advising students through peer mentorship programs, leadership training, retention activities, educational curriculum presentations, and direct advising/counseling. The Coordinator also assists students in financial literacy and collaborates with partners to support student needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide advising and support to OBSS students through individual and group meetings, activities, and events. Utilize interviewing and counseling techniques to support growth.
  • Promote student retention by assessing needs and connecting them with CSUSB resources: financial aid, scholarships, academic advising, Career Services, internships, Basic Needs, research opportunities, Health Services, CAPS, and community services.
  • Encourage engagement by recommending programs aligned with academic and personal goals.
  • Serve as liaison, maintaining collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and partners to support OBSS initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Recruitment and Admissions to deliver presentations to K‑12 students and families, increasing Black student enrollment and engagement.
  • Work with the Director to strengthen peer mentoring and support a faculty‑student mentoring program.
  • Utilize institutional platforms (African American Data Dashboard and EAB) to identify and assist students who could benefit from additional support.
  • Collaborate with campus partners for accurate sharing of academic progress for OBSS‑affiliated students.
  • Represent OBSS at campus and community meetings, trainings, and events.
  • Support the Director in planning and executing OBSS events, including workshops, educational sessions, and philanthropic activities.
  • Assist with data collection, report preparation, and program assessments.
  • Provide lead work direction, training, and guidance to Student Assistants, Peer Mentors, part‑time staff, and volunteers; contribute to performance evaluations.
  • Attend conferences and professional development trainings as required.
  • Participate in OBSS‑related events such as orientations, cultural programs, and academic advising trainings.
  • Engage in Division of Student Affairs activities, meetings, and trainings as requested.
  • Maintain student records in compliance with FERPA, U.S. Department of Education regulations, and university policies.
  • Perform other classification‑related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Required

Education and Experience
  • Equivalent of two (2) years professional experience in a student services program area or related field. A master’s degree may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Graduated from a four‑year college or university in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or related field. Specialized experience may substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of program practices, procedures, and activities.
  • General knowledge of organizational and program management methods.
  • Knowledge of research and interview techniques; principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; initiative and resourcefulness in planning and implementing program improvements.
  • Experience obtaining and analyzing data; ability to advise students individually and in groups.
  • Recognition of multicultural, multi‑sexed, and multi‑aged values.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, agencies, and others in committee work and advising.
