Under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer the Transportation Engineering Technician will perform non‑professional engineering duties in the Transportation Management Center (TMC) to monitor and evaluate urban freeway system operations and minimize congestion delays. The role requires flexibility in work hours and days, routine background investigation per California Highway Patrol (CHP), and verification of eligibility via the transportation engineering technician exam or state examination list.
Responsibilities- Monitor and evaluate urban freeway operations.
- Analyze traffic data and recommend operational actions to reduce congestion.
- Maintain and update TMC data systems.
- Coordinate with transportation agencies and emergency services as needed.
- Work intermittent shifts, weekends, and holidays; adhere to scheduling of up to 1,500 hours per 12 months.
- Complete background investigation and CHP compliance.
Minimum Requirements
- Eligibility at minimum via Transportation Engineering Technician exam or state examination list.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license if operating a State‑owned or leased vehicle.
- Basic education requirements per Classification Specification (include unofficial or original transcripts for verification).
- Strong analytical, communication, and computer skills.
- Ability to work in a control‑room environment under dimmed lighting and noise.
- Ability to commute to 13892 Victoria St., Fontana, CA as required.
The position is located in a control‑room facility with dimmed artificial lighting, climate‑controlled temperatures, and considerable noise from radios and telephones.
Special RequirementsThe incumbent may be eligible for telework; amount of telework determined by department policy. Business travel and commute expenses to headquarters are the candidate’s responsibility.
