Job Overview
Priority will be provided to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District employees and candidates currently enrolled in paramedic school or who have completed paramedic school and are awaiting exam date. Candidates will be auto‑promoted to Firefighter Paramedic Trainee upon completion of the Tower training program.

EligibilityAll applicants must be on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) and possess a CA EMT License or Nationally Registered EMT (NREMT) certification at the time of application.
Training and PromotionThe San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is an all‑risk/full‑service fire department. The Firefighter Trainee is the entry‑level class in the Firefighter series, paid at $30.69 /hr for a 40‑hour workweek while attending the San Bernardino County Fire Tower Academy.
Trainees learn fire prevention and suppression, equipment and apparatus care, usage, safety and maintenance; fire terminology, codes, policies, procedures and operations; and state and local laws.
Work under training conditions to develop the knowledge and skills needed to qualify for promotion to Firefighter Paramedic upon successful completion of a paramedic program and licensing.
Upon successful completion of the Tower, trainees will be promoted to Firefighter – Paramedic Trainee, earning $74,314.24 – $99,968.96 per year based on a 56‑hour workweek.
Conditions of Employment- Probationary Period:
Successful completion of the San Bernardino County Fire Tower (Academy) and the Firefighter I Certification through the California State Fire Service Training and Education System is required. Upon successful completion, incumbents will be appointed to a Firefighter – Paramedic Trainee position. - Promotion:
Incumbents in the Firefighter Paramedic Trainee classification are eligible for promotion to Firefighter Paramedic within 36 months. Failure to meet this time frame may result in termination.
Physical Requirements
Certifications required: CA EMT Certification and CPR.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform during high‑stress situations, hear in the normal audio range without correction, lift and carry equipment and individuals, wear a self‑contained breathing apparatus, meet vision requirements (correctable to 20/20), pass a color perception test if required, and work in a variety of environmental conditions.
Other Requirements:
- Fingerprinting, Department of Justice criminal background check, polygraph, pre‑employment psychological evaluation, DMV driving record check, military record check, reference checks, and review of prior employment history.
- Medical examination and meeting NFPA 1582 medical requirements. Pre‑employment drug test required.
- Adherence to County Fire and Special Districts Dress Code (no visible tattoos).
Candidates must successfully complete a job‑related physical assessment prior to receiving a final job offer. The assessment includes:
- Beep Test – multi‑stage shuttle run.
- Pull‑Ups – minimum number within time limit.
- Push‑Ups – minimum number within time limit.
- Sit‑Ups – minimum number within time limit.
Minimum Requirements
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- Possess a valid Cal‑JAC CPAT Card.
- Receive a passing score on the FCTC Written Test (score expires 12 months from date taken; only scores of 80% or higher are accepted).
- Valid California EMT License or Nationally Registered EMT Certification required at the time of application and must be attached to your application (must be current and in good standing).
- Current CPR/BLS certification (copy must be attached to your application).
