We are seeking an On-Call Biologist to support biological surveys, environmental assessments, and regulatory compliance activities across California. This flexible, field-based role is well suited to a biologist who can respond to short-notice assignments and work in a variety of habitats and weather conditions. Assignments may involve travel to project sites, including areas with limited public access or uneven terrain, and may require early starts, extended days, overnight stays, or occasional weekend work.
Responsibilities may include conducting surveys for sensitive plants, wildlife, nesting birds, bats, reptiles, amphibians, and other biological resources; documenting species observations and habitat conditions; assisting with pre-construction surveys, biological monitoring, and environmental clearance activities; and supporting compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. You may also help identify and flag sensitive resources, monitor construction activities, collect field data using GPS and mobile applications, photograph site conditions, and prepare clear field notes, data summaries, and technical reports.
The role may involve coordinating with project managers, engineers, contractors, agency representatives, landowners, and other field personnel while maintaining professional communication and sound ecological judgement.
A degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resources, or a related discipline is preferred, along with relevant field experience in California. Knowledge of regional flora, fauna, habitats, and environmental regulations is highly desirable. Candidates should be comfortable working independently and as part of a team, interpreting technical guidance, following health and safety procedures, and meeting strict documentation deadlines. Strong observational, organisational, and written communication skills are required.
Experience with GPS units, GIS applications, data-collection software, and standard field equipment is advantageous. A valid driver's licence, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel throughout California are required. Availability, responsiveness, and willingness to accept assignments based on project needs are essential for success in this on-call position.
