Position: Public Safety Dispatcher (Per Diem)

Overview

The City of San Bruno is accepting applications for Per Diem Public Safety Dispatcher for the San Bruno Police Department. This is a per-diem position. Shifts are offered based on staffing needs, and per-diem employees may choose the open shifts that are available. Available shifts may include day, swing, or graveyard hours, including weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic.
  • Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs.
  • Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) system and other computer programs to process information and records.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
  • Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks: process warrants; assist in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and other transactions.
  • Maintains various C.A.D. and Record Management Files.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Proficiency with computer keyboard; skill with radio, telephone, and computers.
  • Active listening; conveying information clearly and concisely to individuals or groups.
  • Ability to consider internal and external customer perspectives when making decisions and taking action; customer-focused practices.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in responsibilities or environment and collaborate to implement change.
  • Ability to analyze information, identify problems and opportunities, and choose the best course of action.
  • Establishing and sustaining trusting relationships by accurately perceiving and interpreting emotions and behaviors.
  • Taking prompt action to accomplish work goals and be proactive.
  • Thoroughness in accomplishing tasks and attention to all aspects of the job.
  • Maintains stable performance while handling stress.
Minimum Qualifications

Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation.

Education
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED; additional related college coursework or degree preferred.
Experience
  • Completion of a probationary period in a public safety agency.
Certificates and Licenses
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record.
  • Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Dispatch Certificate is required.
Special Requirements
  • Possess excellent vision and hearing skills, with ability to sit, talk, type, hear, and walk for extended periods of time as well as lift or move up to 25 pounds.
Supplemental Information

Part-time temporary employees serve in an at-will capacity and understand that service with the City may be terminated at any time. This position does not provide benefits, with the exception of paid sick leave. Temporary, part-time, and seasonal employees are entitled to paid sick leave under applicable laws. Leave accrues and may be used according to policy.
