Job Description & How to Apply Below

Job Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis.

We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

In this role, you’ll lead Joby’s energy storage and distribution system software team. This system is responsible for safely powering the aircraft, managing high voltage systems, and providing state-of-x estimates to the pilot and control system. This team is responsible for developing, testing, and deploying all software pertaining to this system – from high level algorithms to embedded drivers. As this software includes both C++ and model-based elements, and many aspects of this software are safety critical, the code must be DO-178C and DO-331 compliant.

Achieving this will be an important objective of the role, and will be closely supported by Joby’s systems engineering and broader software organizations.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a team of software engineers responsible for delivering battery management systems software development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and refine battery system requirements, operational constraints, and estimation and control algorithms.
  • Work closely with different stakeholders to understand battery operating conditions, limitations, and BMS requirements for control and estimation.
  • Develop, review, and optimize embedded software to translate BMS requirements into reliable, high-performance code.
  • Perform data analysis and testing to support algorithm development and validation.
  • Ensure BMS software meets DO-178C and DO-331 certification standards through rigorous documentation, testing, and validation.
  • Manage milestones, schedules, and deliverables for BMS software development.
  • Provide technical mentorship, training, and growth opportunities for team members.
Required
  • Demonstrated success in leading software engineering teams, including mentoring, task prioritization, and performance management in a fast-paced environment.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience developing software for Li-ion battery management systems, including state estimation and fault diagnostics.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science/engineering, robotics, electrical engineering, or equivalent and 7+ years of industry experience.
  • Expert-level C++, Matlab/Simulink, and Python coding skills.
  • Experience with collaborative software development tools, with an emphasis on version control (git) and continuous integration.
  • Proficiency in developing software for real-time operating systems (RTOS), debugging embedded systems, and optimizing performance on constrained hardware.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
Desired
  • Experience with DO-178C and/or DO-331 compliant software projects.
  • Advanced degree in engineering.
  • Familiarity with high voltage systems.
  • Familiarity with Linux.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet/UDP.

Please still apply if you don’t meet all items in the desired section! Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse and effective workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway.

You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
