San Diego State University is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Department Assistant Coordinator to serve as the front‑line contact for a busy academic department. This role supports both the administrative and instructional needs of the department, ensuring efficient daily operations, faculty support, and student engagement.
Key Responsibilities- Administrative Support: Manage front-desk reception, phone and email communications, mail distribution, office equipment training, key distribution, procurement, and support for departmental events and administrative tasks.
- Instructional Program Support: Assist students with course and scheduling inquiries; support faculty with instructional materials, document preparation, and file management; aid graduate advisors and help build semester course schedules.
- Be the first point of contact and resource for students, faculty, and staff
- Support impactful events and programs that shape the academic experience
- Work in a collaborative environment where attention to detail and service matter
- Gain hands‑on experience in academic coordination and department operations
- This is a full-time (1.0 time‑base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated non‑exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- This position is eligible for telecommuting up to 1 day per week, following a training period during which on‑site presence is required.
The College of Sciences comprises eight academic departments, five joint doctoral programs, and several research centers and institutes, including the Coastal and Marine Institute, the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education, and the Molecular Biology Institute. The College also oversees off‑campus sites such as the Biological Research Field Stations and the Mt. Laguna Observatory. It is home to more than 300 full‑ and part‑time faculty, supported by over 80 clerical and technical staff, with broad expertise in both teaching and research.
The Department of Chemistry at San Diego State University includes 20 faculty members, approximately 40 Teaching Associates, and 10 staff positions. The Department offers five degree programs: B.A., B.S., M.A., M.S., and a Joint Ph.D. with the University of California, San Diego. Students may pursue specialized study in Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry.

Education and ExperienceEntry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic.
The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.
These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.
