The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks a part-time Educator to join our team. Position Summary
The Part-Time Educator plays a vital role in supporting the Museum’s education team by assisting with both in-museum and outreach programming. This position is responsible for delivering engaging, hands-on educational experiences to diverse audiences, including school groups, families, and the public. The educator will facilitate weekend programs, including the Museum’s Cart program, and serve as an education representative during weekends. Additionally, they will assist in running birthday parties, supporting other educators, and conducting outreach programs using the Museum’s Mission Control Bus.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the Museum’s education team by assisting in the planning and delivery of in-museum and outreach programs.
  • Serve as an education representative on weekends, facilitating public programs and ensuring a high-quality visitor experience.
  • Conduct outreach programs using the Museum’s Mission Control Bus, bringing educational experiences to schools and community events.
  • Run the Museum Cart program, engaging visitors with interactive, educational experiences.
  • Facilitate and run birthday party programs, ensuring an engaging and educational experience for attendees.
  • Deliver engaging and interactive educational programs for school groups, families, and general visitors.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of educational content for Museum programming.
  • Support other educators by helping prepare materials, setting up and breaking down activities, and assisting with program logistics.
  • Represent the Museum’s education department during public events and outreach activities.
  • Provide exceptional customer service while engaging visitors in a dynamic, educational setting.

Desired Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in education-related field
  • Teaching experience, preferably in informal education

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Comfortable working with children, families, and diverse audiences in both formal and informal settings.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative while also being a strong team player.
  • Availability to work weekends and occasional evenings for special events.
  • A passion for education, history, science, or museum learning is a plus!
  • Ability to work in an informal learning environment teaching hands-on engineering challenges, demonstrations, tours, and other projects to students from preschool to high school
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for STEM fields
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Ability to multitask and respond to changing teaching environments
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of current office and classroom standard software, including Microsoft Office and Google Docs

Working Conditions
Work may be performed in an office environment, museum environment, or field environment. Physical activity requiring handling of lightweight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than five (5) hours per day.

Some evenings and weekends may be requested. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug-free workplace. A criminal background clearance is required prior to a final offer of employment. Other clearances such as fingerprinting and TB testing may be necessary to comply with San Diego Unified School District and/or grant funding requirements.

Compensation
$20-$22 per hour
