DESCRIPTION
Senior Specialist of Health Sciences Employee Relations reports to the Director of Employee Relations in Health Human Resources. In consultation with the Director, the Senior Specialist’s primary responsibility involves fact‑finding activities related to known concerns and complaints, as well as formally conducting thorough investigations impacting both health sciences and the health system employees, providing direct support to Health Sciences schools, departments, centers, and institutes on employee relations matters involving faculty, academics, residents, MSP staff physicians, and other academic populations.
This position is responsible for developing and fostering relationships within the VCHS many offices, as well as UCSD campus offices. Functions as liaison to other leaders in Health Human Resources and the Health Sciences. The incumbent is expected to partner with VCHS Academic Affairs and Academic Personnel Services (APS) to determine if a violation of policy or good standing occurred, as APS is the subject matter experts on the Academic Personnel Manual (APM), and identify and pursue the appropriate administrative process as outlined in UCSD Policy & Procedure Manual (PPM) and any relevant Collective Bargaining Agreements.
Other duties as assigned.
- Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.
- Extensive employee relations experience in a large, complex, matrixed environment.
- In‑depth knowledge of external administrative agencies and their roles in the complaint process, including EEOC, DFEH, OFCCP, OCR, and DOL.
- Exceptional conflict resolution skills to address and manage extremely difficult and volatile situations/individuals effectively.
- Advanced knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations. Extensive knowledge of state & federal laws, rules, and regulations concerning all areas of employment and academics, including discrimination, sexual harassment, contract, research misconduct, whistleblowers, records and confidentiality, defamation, and other areas. Experience researching the same when needed.
- Ability to analyze highly sensitive and complex management issues; develop scope and solutions for projects/department issues and concerns.
- Demonstrated skill and experience in analytical writing. Experience in drafting discharge documents, corrective action correspondence, investigative reports, and other important employment documents.
- Ability to develop and implement effective training, informational, and educational programs that meet the needs of high‑level academic leaders.
- Experience with an academic setting.
- Experience with in the University of California system.
- Familiarity with University of California and California public higher education human resources law, policies, and procedures. Extensive knowledge and experience with UC Academic policies and procedures, as well as bargaining agreements.
- Extensive knowledge of legal risk factors in area of employment law, and employment litigation procedures.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical.
Annual Full Pay Range: $97,200 - $182,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $46.55 - $87.16
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
