Position with the California Department of Insurance (CDI). This role is located in the San Diego regional office and is a permanent, full‑time position that combines law enforcement duties with investigative reporting and case management.
Pay Range and Salary Differentials- Base Pay A: $6,339.00 – $8,558.00 per annum
- Base Pay B: $7,306.00 – $10,609.00 per annum
- Recruitment & Retention Differential: $200 per month (Los Angeles, Santa Clara, Solano counties)

San Diego County – 10021 Willow Creek Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92131 - Department Information: CDI is the consumer protection agency overseeing more than 1,400 insurance companies and licensing over 425,000 agents, brokers, adjusters, and business entities.
Background check, fingerprinting, psychological screening, and medical examination are required. The CDI seeks a detective with recent state service as a peace officer who investigates auto, workers’ compensation, property and casualty insurance fraud and produces clear, concise correspondence and investigative reports. The detective works under the supervision of a Supervising Fraud Investigator I. Investigators handle a range of law‑enforcement responsibilities from entry‑level to highly complex duties.
They conduct criminal investigations of felony violations of state and federal law related to insurance fraud and white‑collar crime. Work can involve solo investigations, team efforts, or leading investigations of criminal enterprises and profiteering activities. Investigators aid in prosecution in both state and federal courts and perform full peace‑officer duties in accordance with the California Penal Code §830.3.
The position requires completion of a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700) within 30 days of appointment, annual filings, and a leaving‑office filing. Non‑compliance may result in appointment voiding, financial penalties, or enforcement actions.
