DESCRIPTION

The Clinical Nurse Specialist serves as a medical center wide or systemwide clinical practice expert on current best practices in management of the adult oncology patient within all levels of care.

  • Serves as an expert resource across multiple nursing units to assist multidisciplinary teams with the most complex and difficult cases, including both oncology and adult medicine patients.
  • Uses expertise in oncology care, including but not limited to chemotherapy, immunotherapy and symptom management to provide education, consultation, and develop evidence-based practice.
  • Clinical coordination of antineoplastic therapy, including non-oncology units.
  • Maintain clinical competence to administer antineoplastics.
  • Implement an oncology development program, including ongoing learning needs of chemotherapy competent nurses.
  • Collaborate on curriculum development and instruction for oncology classes for new hires.
  • Support staff maintenance of annual competencies.
  • Provide consultation and routine patient rounding for oncology and patients receiving antineoplastics.
  • Collaborates and develops oncology programs, processes, education resources, and policy/guideline updates for all levels of patient acuity and complexity.
  • Convenes or leads interdisciplinary teams to address issues related to nursing practices.
  • Advises nursing leadership and providers on topics related to quality outcomes, evidence-based practice, and efficiency of clinical care.
  • Provides ongoing mentorship for staff professional development.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.
  • A Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) is required for the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role.
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license issued by the state of California. Required to be hired in CNS role.
  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Seven (7+) or more years of recent and relevant oncology clinical experience.
  • ONS chemotherapy certification or agreement to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Expert knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Expert critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to assess highly‑complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.
  • Expert skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey highly complex and/or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Expert knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, and often broad knowledge of multiple specialties. Includes diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice, patient / family educational consulting, and resources.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with management and staff across departments.
  • Provides counsel and guidance on highly‑complex issues of functionality, clinical quality, efficiency, and program development.
