Nurse Practitioner – Trauma Surgery (Per Diem)
Pay Scale: $118.32 per hour (20% appointment, prorated for less than 100%)
Work Schedule: Days, 12‑hour shifts (Sunday–Saturday)
Location: Hillcrest, UC San Diego Health
Job OverviewUnder the direction of clinical faculty, the Nurse Practitioner provides patient care in Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and General Surgery. Responsibilities include full clinical support for in‑patients and out‑patients, planning and evaluating health‑care treatments for critically ill and injured patients, assisting in General Surgery and Trauma Clinics, and participating in research and quality assurance studies. The role requires strong knowledge in trauma, critical care, and general surgery and collaboration with trauma coordinators, financial counselors, social workers, and research nurses.
Minimum Qualifications- Current California Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) license
- Current NP specialty certification (ACNP or AGACNP)
- State of California NP Furnishing Number (if administering medicine)
- BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire, with plan to obtain ART within 6 months
- At least one year of recent NP experience in trauma, acute care surgery, or surgical critical care
- Proficiency in patient and family counseling, especially in delicate or end‑of‑life situations
- Effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and multidisciplinary team members
- Ability to write inpatient and outpatient orders and maintain accurate documentation
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, ethics, and law
- Skill in assessing and reporting patient status to physicians and care teams
- Efficiency in serving a high volume of patients within established time limits
- Ability to analyze and interpret clinical data meaningfully
- Proficiency in use of specialized medical equipment
- Strong background in anatomy, physiology, medical pharmacology, counseling, and interpersonal dynamics
- Experience performing history and physical examinations, identifying major problems, and formulating appropriate plans
- Excellent written, verbal, and telephone communication skills, including preparation of medical reports and protocols
- Ability to participate in research or quality assurance studies
- At least two years of recent trauma NP experience
- Level 1 Trauma experience
- Knowledge of UCSD Medical Center clinical and ancillary services
- Must obtain and maintain UCSD Medical Staff privileges; advanced practice experience must be within the last two years
- Employment subject to criminal background check and pre‑employment physical
- Practice in accordance with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance
- Weekend work and overtime may be required
Annual Full Pay Range: $247,052 – $247,052 (prorated for the appointment percentage). Factors include experience, skills, knowledge, education, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.
Additional RequirementsUniversity of California employees must comply with the Policy on Vaccination Programs. Life‑support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) require hands‑on practice and in‑person assessment.
