Post-Doctoral Research Scientist

The Columbia Fusion Research Center, within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Columbia University in the City of New York, invites applications for Post-Doctoral Research Scientist positions in the area of magnetically confined plasma research.

Successful candidates will advance research in magnetically confined plasmas and support the broader goals of the Center. Center staff execute a range of research supporting public and private fusion sponsors. Post-doctoral positions can support a range of activities and are not a-priori limited to specific tasks. Candidates should explain both their any preferred research interest as well as their broader interest in additional directions.

In the tokamak area, the candidate may conduct research on experimental tokamak facilities in the public sector. Examples include the DIII-D tokamak located at General Atomics or tokamaks located abroad. Research opportunities exist in the control of tokamak core and edge transients, the definition of stable operating scenarios, and additional activities supporting tokamak device design. In the stellarator area, opportunities exist to conduct research in edge transport and turbulence, heat exhaust and particle control, energetic particle physics, and other related activities.

Opportunities also exist to conducted research in support of industrially sponsored research contracts originating from a wide array of sponsors, including magnetically confined concepts beyond tokamaks and stellarators.

The successful candidate will also be expected to assist in the mentorship of students.

Positions are expected to begin in 2027.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. (or equivalent professional degree) in plasma physics or a related field, and experience with different computer environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity of working with magnetically confined plasma computational modeling tools and their application to interpret experimental data. Familiarity with magnetically confined plasma experimental data and measurement methods. Demonstrated track record of mentorship. Publications in top-rated journals in the field and presentations at national and international conferences
