Overview

The County of San Diego has current openings for Building Maintenance Engineers!

Some positions may receive a Locked Facilities Premium and shall be compensated an additional fifty cents ($0.50) per hour for each hour worked in a locked facility in the Sheriff’s Department.

Practical exams will take place the week of March 2nd, 2026, interviews will take place the week of March 9th, 2026 and job offers will be made the week of March 16th, 2026.

FUTURE SALARY INCREASES

June 2026 – 4.38% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + 1.38% Market Adjustment)

June 2027 – 4.28% increase to base pay (2.90% Across-the-Board + 1.38% Market Adjustment)

About the Role

The county encompasses an area of over 4,000 square miles and is divided into four regions containing 17 zones for maintenance purposes. This work includes preventive maintenance on essential building systems, time-critical response to emergency repairs, accomplishment of unscheduled maintenance services, and oversight of contract support and at select County facilities. Each zone consists of a Building Maintenance Supervisor (BMS) with a crew of Facilities Operations professionals including Building Maintenance Engineers/Assistants (BME/A), Carpenters, HVAC Technicians, Electricians, Electronic Security Technicians, Welders, Painters, Masons, and Plumbers, as well as overseeing contract vendors that support their operations.

Building Maintenance Engineers (BME) are responsible for independently operating, maintaining, and repairing a variety of building or facility systems including electrical, mechanical, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing, commercial laundry and kitchen equipment and performing the ongoing maintenance and safety functions at various County facilities.

This recruitment will be used to fill positions located all throughout San Diego County. Responsibilities

Operate, maintain, and repair building or facility systems across multiple County facilities; perform preventive maintenance, respond to time-critical repairs, and support contract vendors to ensure service quality and safety.

    Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

  • Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of experience operating, maintaining, or repairing building/facility electrical, mechanical, HVAC or plumbing systems, OR
  • Two (2) years of experience operating, maintaining, or repairing building/facility electrical, mechanical, HVAC or plumbing systems; AND completion of two (2) semesters of coursework at a college, vocational school, Regional Occupational Program or equivalent program in either electrical, plumbing, or HVAC.

    As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
