What this job involves

As an HVAC / Mechanical Technician, you’ll provide advanced expertise in responding to work orders, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance on industrial or commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment. You’ll also respond to hot and cold calls while utilizing automated building controls.

This position requires managing complex facility operations within the stringent requirements of a Life Science environment, where precision, compliance, and safety are paramount. You’ll serve as a key liaison between vendors, facilities staff, finance teams, and clients to ensure seamless coordination and execution of all lab and facility‑related activities.

Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair heating,, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Perform service on pumps, fans, kitchen equipment, dishwashers, plumbing fixtures, and other mechanical equipment as required.
  • Utilize the building automation system to track building conditions and the operation of facility equipment.
  • Assist and coach lower‑level technicians with work assignments.
  • Create and modify site operations procedures for equipment and recommend reliability improvements.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, and related control systems as scheduled in the CMMS.
  • Execute mechanical upgrades and installations in accordance with code requirements and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Use strong computer skills to complete and document work and communicate with customers and the client.
  • Respond to customer service requests for all work orders, ensuring compliance with codes, regulations, site policies, and industry standards.
  • Under general supervision, perform tasks that reflect substantial variety and complexity, relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Recommend measures to improve maintenance methods and equipment performance.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in solving work problems.
  • Undergo company policy training and enforce safety regulations.
  • Follow safety guidelines such as job hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, and wear PPE as required.
  • Operate measuring, diagnostic, and testing instruments to help provide energy‑efficiency solutions.
  • Utilize hand tools, laptop computers, and diagnostic hardware to perform work.
  • Maintain a strict schedule to be successful in the assignment.
  • Show flexibility in day‑to‑day activities and scheduling for the benefit of the customer.
  • Provide adequate response to facility emergencies, including plumbing, electrical, roofing, and carpentry issues.
  • Be available to respond to after‑hours emergencies on‑site as needed.
  • Read and understand repair manuals, specifications, drawings, and schematic diagrams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager or Supervisor.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of experience with maintenance & repair of commercial HVAC systems.
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Universal EPA 608 refrigerant handling certification or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Detail‑oriented approach with accuracy in record‑keeping.
  • Ability to work effectively in controlled Life Science environments.
  • Experience with work‑order management systems.
  • Proficiency with standard office software and documentation systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in Life Science or controlled environment facilities.
  • Background in facility management and operations.
  • Experience with KPI tracking and performance measurement.
  • Knowledge of emergency response planning and safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with Life Science regulatory requirements and compliance.
  • Background in inventory management systems.
Location

San Diego, CA

Work Schedule

7am – 3:30pm M‑F (potential for 4–10 hour days)

Work Environment
  • Regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Climb extension ladders, roof ladders, stepladders, and stairs as required.
  • Flexibility to bend, stoop, squats, and perform repetitive movements during the shift.
