Job Description

Marine Electrician

  • Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, cables, equipment, and connectors.
  • Uses hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Inspects and tests electrical equipment, lighting, signal, communication, and power circuits.
  • Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment using general and specialized testing equipment.
  • Replaces faulty switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems.
  • Dismantles electrical machinery and replaces defective electrical or mechanical parts such as gears, brushes, and armatures.
  • Mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits according to diagram specifications.
  • Works from drawings, blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Participates in special projects as required.
  • Must be able to obtain all necessary badges (DBIDS and shipyard).
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes up to 75 lbs.

Education:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED. Combination of education, technical training or work experience.

Qualifications:

  • 2-5+ years of related electrical experience.
  • Must be able to obtain access to various shipyards

Duties

  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain marine electrical systems including wiring, lighting, power distribution, and control systems on vessels.
  • Interpret technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings to accurately diagnose electrical issues.
  • Conduct electrical diagnostics using tools such as ohmmeters, multimeters, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Perform maintenance on marine propulsion systems, electrical components, and mechanical systems integral to vessel operation.
  • Utilize hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, soldering irons, calipers, and sheet metal fabrication techniques for repairs and installations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols by properly using personal protective equipment (PPE) during all maintenance activities.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs in accordance with operational standards.
  • Assist in troubleshooting engineering issues related to marine electrical systems and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a service technician or electrician within a marine or heavy industry setting.
  • Strong understanding of schematics, technical drawings, and engineering troubleshooting methods.
  • Military background or experience is highly desirable due to familiarity with rigorous safety standards and technical procedures.
  • Demonstrated electrical experience with ship electrical systems maintenance and marine propulsion systems troubleshooting.
  • Mechanical knowledge including marine engine repair, mechanical systems repair, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, soldering techniques, calipers, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience with maintenance, repair & operations (MRO), sheet metal fabrication, heavy lifting techniques, and assembly processes.
  • Knowledge of water transportation equipment maintenance including diesel mechanics is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings accurately and perform fabrication tasks as needed.
  • Excellent customer service skills combined with the ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to safety practices by consistently using PPE and adhering to industry standards for hazardous environments.
