This is a Contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department. The position is anticipated to span approximately 4 years, with the contract renewed on an annual basis.
DescriptionUnder the direction of Managing Senior Executive Director of Development, Health Sciences Advancement (MSEDOD-HSA), the Philanthropic Officer will be responsible for securing major gifts ($100,000 and above) for the priorities identified by Health Sciences leadership with special emphasis placed on creating and implementing strategies for successful solicitations and building strategic relationships with Surgery faculty and staff. The Philanthropic Officer will be responsible for managing a prospect/donor portfolio in various stages of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
Due to the sensitive nature of the fundraising priorities, the officer will be skilled in communicating confidential information and engage grateful patients within compliance. The officer will collaborate closely with colleagues in both Health Sciences Advancement and University Development, maintain a close partnership with Surgery Chair and Administrative Vice Chair, and will serve on additional committees and task forces as requested by Health Sciences Leadership.
The Department of Surgery is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine and is comprised of 102 full time faculty members, 220 voluntary faculty members, 20 physicians employed on MSP agreements, 25 doctors employed by the VA or other facilities, 77 accredited and 13 non-accredited trainees and 100 career staff. Activities are organized in 12 sub-specialty divisions. Annual expenditures across the Department total over $66.5M with a global research portfolio of over $19M.

- Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Demonstrated success at raising major gifts by developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation plans for gifts of $100,000+ from individuals, corporations, and foundations, both local and national.
- Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including: gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, high level boards, support groups and administration.
- Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.
- Expert organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expert project / program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program / project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
