Job Description & Duties
  • Work under the supervision of a California Maintenance Complete Streets Supervisor.
  • Assist in supervising the Complete Streets Crew engaged in maintenance of sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike lanes within the State Highway System.
  • Operate heavy equipment, hand equipment, manage materials, and coordinate traffic control on a road crew.
  • Conduct site inventory and condition assessment of Complete Streets facilities.
  • Provide training for crew members when qualified and licensed.
  • Operate specialty Caltrans equipment when appropriately qualified and licensed.
  • Receive additional training from maintenance staff or Headquarters.
  • Work overtime, irregular shifts, holidays, weekends, and respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Travel to locations and stay overnight to meet department needs.
Special Requirements
  • The position requires passing a drug screening prior to being hired.
  • A valid, Class B unrestricted driver's license with tank vehicle (N) endorsement is required. Class A driver's license is preferred for equipment operation.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State‑owned or leased vehicle.
Eligibility

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE LEAD WORKER exam. Applicants who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or are new to state civil services employment must be on the state examination list.
