Communications Dispatcher II – Water Supply & Treatment Division – SFPUC (1705)
Join the City and County of San Francisco as a Communications Dispatcher II in the Water Supply & Treatment Division. This role provides around‑the‑clock dispatch support to department managers, supervisors, field crews and operations personnel.
Appointment TypeTemporary, exempt. The position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
Reporting Hours & Location- As‑needed temporary appointment not to exceed 1,040 hours in a fiscal year.
- Candidate covers full or partial shifts on an as‑needed basis.
- Shift options:
Day (7:00 am–3:00 pm), Swing (3:00 pm–11:00 pm), Graveyard (11:00 pm–7:00 am). - Location:
San Francisco Water Supply and Treatment Division, 1000 El Camino Real, Millbrae, CA 94030.
- Operate a variety of communications equipment (multi‑line telephones, keyboard, two‑way radio and pager systems) to receive and transmit information.
- Request reports and emergency calls from mobile radio field units and telephones, and route calls to appropriate bureaus or units for action.
- Verify and evaluate received messages for accuracy, ensuring proper receipt and understanding, and determine necessary action and appropriate staff or agency notification.
- Dispatch mobile units and equipment to specific work locations, handle traffic control, citing and towing services, and request ambulance or tow‑truck services when needed.
- Record information in an electronic system using a computer‑based messaging system; log daily entries, track entries and exits of watersheds by permit holders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Two years of verifiable experience operating a two‑way radio communications base station, receiving, recording and transmitting messages.
- OR
- Combined total of two years of verifiable experience operating a multi‑line telephone and a two‑way radio communications base system, with at least one year operating the radio base station.
- Experience working as a communications dispatcher or operator.
- Knowledge in responding to emergency calls and effective multitasking.
- Strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of reading maps and conveying accurate information.
- Ability to evaluate information and make sound decisions.
- Responsible and able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
- Availability for frequent flexibility such as nights, weekends and holidays (day, swing or graveyard shift).
