Job Overview

Assignment Editor – KPIX 5 (television station)

Essential responsibilities include leading breaking news coverage, monitoring scanners, coordinating logistics, dispatching crews, and developing innovative stories.

• Monitor news scanners and phone calls to track breaking events.
• Coordinate logistics and dispatch crews promptly.
• Develop contacts and plan enterprising stories.
• Make informed decisions under deadline pressure, operating I‑News system and other newsroom tools.

• Minimum 3 years as Assignment Editor in a major market.
• College degree in Journalism, Communications or related field.
• Knowledge of Bay Area required.
• Exceptional organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Proficiency with desktop computer, I‑News system and other newsroom computer systems.
• Familiarity with newsroom functions, digital platforms and social media tools.
• Available to work mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Operate keyboard accurately and possess a valid driver’s license for breaking‑news pick‑ups; sit for extended periods.

Fast‑paced work environment with noise from scanners, two‑way radios, and televisions.

Hiring Salary Range: $34.0 - $35.0 per hour (applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state and most other geographies).
