Position Description

The UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) is recruiting compassionate and skilled palliative care physicians to join our Palliative Care Service (inpatient consultation service) as academic faculty. We seek clinically excellent mission‑driven physicians at all levels of experience who thrive in an academic safety‑net environment and are eager to contribute to scholarship, teaching, and health‑system improvement while delivering outstanding and equitable care to a seriously ill and safety‑net patient population.

Physicians in this role will provide primarily direct inpatient palliative care consultation at San Francisco’s only public hospital and Level 1 trauma center. Our interdisciplinary team helps patients, families, and care teams navigate serious illness with clarity, empathy, and respect, ensuring that medical care aligns with patients’ values, goals, and needs.

In addition to their primary responsibilities, interested faculty may have opportunities to:

  • Explore participation in outpatient palliative care delivery at ZSFG and/or UCSF Health, depending on program needs and mutual interest
  • Provide direct patient care in hospital medicine at ZSFG
  • Serve as an attending physician on the UCSF internal medicine resident teaching inpatient service
Why UCSF at ZSFG?
  • Clinical Excellence in an Academic Setting – Join mission‑driven faculty where outstanding clinical skills are the foundation of effective teaching, mentorship, and scholarship.
  • High‑Impact Clinical Medicine – Provide expert consultation on symptom management, serious illness communication, and complex decision‑making for patient populations from a range of backgrounds and communities.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration – Work alongside experienced palliative care social workers, chaplains, and nurses in a team‑based model that centers whole‑person care.
  • Academic Environment – Join UCSF’s Division of Hospital Medicine at ZSFG, with access to grand rounds, faculty development, and a community of clinicians committed to excellence in safety‑net care.
  • Mentorship & Career Growth – Faculty benefit from structured mentorship, access to UCSF’s world‑class academic resources, and opportunities to develop expertise in quality improvement, data‑driven operations, and education.
  • Mission‑Driven Values – Serve patients with complex medical and social needs in a public hospital where equitable access to high‑quality care is a core commitment.
Requirements
  • Clinically outstanding board‑certified or board‑eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine who thrive in an academic hospital environment
  • Deep commitment to delivering exceptional care in a safety‑net setting
  • Demonstrated excellence in inpatient palliative care and serious illness communication
  • Passion for teaching, mentorship, and the pursuit of scholarship that advances the field of palliative medicine
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to delivering exceptional patient care while advancing UCSF’s mission of improving health worldwide through outstanding clinical practice, education, and scholarly contributions in palliative medicine.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence‑based practice
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Cantonese (native‑level fluency)
  • Track record of excellence in clinical care, medical education, or systems‑based scholarship
  • Strong communication skills, including empathy, humility, and respect for differing viewpoints
  • Experience working with underserved populations and navigating complex care environments
  • Ability to thrive in dynamic hospital settings and work collaboratively
  • Interest or experience in improving systems of care through quality, safety, education, research, innovation, or operational leadership
