Department of Anesthesia, ZSFG, General Faculty Search

Ready to make a real impact in healthcare? The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care is looking for passionate faculty to join our dynamic team at Zuckerberg San Francisco Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG). This is more than just a job—it's an opportunity to contribute to top-tier, patient-focused care while working with cutting-edge, evidence-based practices.

At UCSF, we're proud of our long history of innovation in anesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine. Our department is one of the best in the world, and we’re dedicated to advancing patient care, groundbreaking research, and top-notch education. Join us and be part of something extraordinary!

Anesthesia faculty members participate as a part of a team that includes over 250 faculty members, 57 staff physicians, 68 CRNAs, 18 fellows, 96 residents, 32 academic researchers, and 188 staff members. The Department has essential roles in patient care outside of the operating rooms, with active participation in Ambulatory Care, Acute and Chronic Pain, and the Preoperative Clinic. UCSF Health encompasses five main campuses: the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights, the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion Medical Center, Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, and Benioff Children’s, Betty Irene Moore Women’s, and Bakar Cancer Hospitals at Mission Bay.

Hired candidates will join the UCSF faculty and primarily practice at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), located in the city’s Mission District. As the only Level 1 Trauma Center serving over 1.5 million residents of San Francisco and northern San Mateo counties, ZSFG plays a vital role in providing 24/7 emergent, urgent, and non-urgent care to more than 100,000 adult and pediatric patients each year.

It also serves as the region’s essential safety-net hospital.

Anesthesia faculty at ZSFG are responsible for a mix of direct patient care and supervision of Anesthesia Residents and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Clinical duties span multiple locations, including 14 high-volume operating rooms with a wide variety of surgical cases, as well as endoscopy and interventional radiology suites. Faculty are also expected to provide care across a range of subspecialty services, including regional, trauma, pediatric, and obstetric anesthesia, as well as inpatient pain management and the preoperative anesthesia clinic.

Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong commitment to medical education and to delivering evidence-based, high-quality care within collaborative clinical teams that prioritize patient safety, experience, and satisfaction. Expertise or interest in trauma care, regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, and perioperative pain management is especially valued, in alignment with the department’s key focus areas. Faculty responsibilities include teaching residents and medical students, participating in faculty meetings, Grand Rounds, M&M conferences, and University service;

contributing to quality improvement and continuing education efforts; and supporting the department’s broader mission.

The successful candidate must meet the following qualifications by time of hire:

  • Must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree and be board eligible or certified in Anesthesia.
  • Must possess a valid California Medical License or equivalent Special Permit issued (or Special Permit application submitted) by the California Medical Board.
  • Must be Fellowship trained or have equivalent advanced training and/or experience beyond that of anesthesia…
