San Francisco Waldorf High School is seeking a dynamic Acting Teacher/Theater Manager to join its faculty immediately. This position offers a unique opportunity to direct plays and musicals as well as teach the Ensemble classes. The Teacher will work with students as both individuals and groups, foster an appreciation of Theatre, and provide a joyful, welcoming and supportive learning environment for meaningful dramatic development.

About

The San Francisco Waldorf School (SFWS) was founded in 1979 and currently enrolls 380 students through a parent‑child program, a preschool program, kindergarten, and Grades 1st – 12th. Fifty percent of students identify as people of color. The high school campus is in the West Portal neighborhood and is easily accessible via public transportation.

Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver creative theater arts pedagogy that values a hands‑on, collaborative, project‑based curriculum.
  • Incorporate theoretical concepts, practical skills, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Use appropriate technology to support a successful program.
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the theater arts program, including production planning, departmental initiatives, and ensuring the organization and safety of productions and their materials.
  • Direct and oversee 2‑3 theatrical productions per year, including show selection, casting, rehearsals, choreography, music, set design, and technical coordination.
  • Ensure all moving parts come together, including load‑in and load‑out.
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and support to students participating in theatrical productions and enrolled in theater classes.
  • Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and mutual respect with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Teach acting principles and provide formalized instruction on performance.
  • Maintain best professional practices in communicating with peers, students, and parents/guardians.
  • Prepare classes, supervise student clean‑up of the classroom as necessary, and create and build upon current theater class syllabi.
  • Take attendance and provide a narrative evaluation and grade for each student at the end of the block; submit evaluations online according to the registrar’s schedule twice per year.
  • Submit expenses according to purchasing and reimbursement procedures, attaching receipts to a check request form and forwarding to the High School Director before turning it into the Business Office for reimbursement.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Theater Arts, Drama Education, Performing Arts, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience preferred).
  • Previous experience in theater production and directing, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Strong understanding of theater techniques, production processes, and theater curriculum development.
  • Passion for inspiring creativity, promoting artistic excellence, and nurturing talent in young performers.
  • Ability to effectively manage a budget.
  • High school teaching experience (preferred).
  • Intellectually curious and willing to grow professionally.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, and staff.

This is a 0.6 FTE position. Benefits include dental, vision, flexible spending plans, retirement plan (employer contributions after one year of employment), and tuition remission (prorated by FTE) for eligible dependents in our Preschool – Grade 12 program (staff fees apply). The full annual salary range is $67K – $95K, depending on training and experience. Salaries are paid on a 12‑month schedule.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Regularly sitting or standing 4‑8 hours.
