Overview
Senior Consultant, Ports and Marine Engineering – join our National Maritime Practice Group. This position can be based in Irvine, San Diego, San Francisco (CA), Miami (FL), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA), or Houston (TX).
Provides engineering support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the development, design, construction, and inspection of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in the public and private sector; facilities may include piers, wharves, port and upland marine terminals, seawalls/bulkheads, dry docks, marinas and other nearshore/offshore facilities. Delivers work products that meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
YourImpact
- Provide leadership for engineering tasks including collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, survey data, technical reports and drawings, and other data matrices for project development, design, and construction.
- Lead development of construction plans and schedules, specifications, and cost estimates for ports and marine projects. Prepare and implement site safety activity plans and coordinate field work activities.
- Lead cross-functional teams to execute project work on mid-level projects or multiple concurrent smaller projects; collaborate with other engineers and multidisciplinary teams on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects. Track budgets and progress of milestone activities, and support completion of Plans, Specifications and Estimate (PS&E) submissions.
- Write technical reports and document findings using sketches, calculations, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and engineering software (including SAP
2000 and similar FEM tools). - Apply higher-order engineering techniques to develop project design requirements, incorporating marine-practice standards. Identify project site, design and construction risks and provide mitigation solutions.
- Create finite element models for design of fixed and floating marine structures under gravity, live, operational, environmental, and seismic loads.
- Prepare design documentation of structural components, including steel and concrete systems, deep foundation systems, and substructure/superstructure elements.
- Prepare project task budgets and schedules for review.
- Prepare and present findings and recommendations to internal/external team members and clients.
- Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
- Conduct overwater and/or over-deck inspections of port terminals and visually assess conditions of elements.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies; exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources.
- Complete all assigned trainings and perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited program.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant engineering experience with marine project design experience (rehabilitation and new design).
- EIT or equivalent licensure.
- Experience in analysis and design of marine projects with SAP
2000 or similar FEM tools; design and detailing of reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel components per ACI, AISC, PCI, and/or AASHTO. - Experience with AutoCAD, REVIT, and BIM tools.
- Experience in ports and marine projects and multidisciplinary team coordination; familiarity with design standards and practices.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and technical report-writing skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a dynamic environment; strong prioritization and multitasking abilities.
- Commits to workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, and harassment policies.
- Occasional travel may be required; ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited program with 7+ years of post-education design experience in ports and marine structures.
- Registered Professional Engineer licensure preferred.
