Project Environmental Engineer / Geologist / Scientist

TRC Companies, Inc. is seeking a mid‑level Civil/Environmental Engineer, Geologist, or Environmental Scientist to join our Engineering, Construction, and Remediation practice in San Francisco, CA.

Overview

This career‑oriented position provides clients with all aspects of environmental consulting from proposal preparation to project execution. The role focuses on further developing technical skills and managing projects, new and existing clients, and workloads. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of senior managers, integrate with our diverse regional team, and demonstrate motivation to serve and grow a sustainable client base.

Responsibilities
  • Execution and management of environmental investigations, remedial actions, construction, compliance programs, and designs.
  • Oversight of environmental sampling (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil gas, and indoor air) in accordance with state and federal regulations, QA/QC procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Preparation and/or senior review of work plans and technical reports, including data analysis, development of technical approaches, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Project planning and preparation, including agency coordination, permitting, site‑specific health and safety plans, coordination of internal field staff, and procurement activities.
  • Regulatory compliance support using knowledge of EPA and DTSC regulations, RCRA, ASTM standards, and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Storm‑water management, including development of SWPPPs, BMP recommendations, and other permit documents.
  • Preparation of proposals for new and existing clients, including development of qualifications, technical approaches, and detailed cost estimates.
  • Project management and administration, including invoicing, direct client interface, QA/QC and safety compliance, and management of scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Implementation of TRC’s safety, quality, and project management programs in accordance with industry best practices and company policies.
Qualifications
  • Ability to lead project teams in successful execution of projects of varying complexity, acting as primary project advocate and point of communication.
  • Demonstrated understanding and management of project scope, terms, resources, and controls.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team and demonstrate technical proficiency, responsibility, and accountability.
  • Ability to grasp scientific concepts and apply them to different technical challenges.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including client interfacing.
  • High capacity for teamwork, creative collaboration, and responsible leadership and delegation.
  • Desire to learn and grow in technical expertise, project management, and business development.
  • High proficiency in data management and reporting using Microsoft Word and Excel.
Required Education and Training
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in civil or environmental engineering, geology, environmental science, or a related field.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant experience, including project management.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations (local/state/federal).
  • Working knowledge of industry health and safety practices.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or GIS (desired).
Required License or Certification
  • OSHA 40‑hour HAZWOPER certification, including current refresher training.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
  • Professional Engineer (PE, Civil) or Professional Geologist (PG) certification in California (desired).
  • Qualified SWPPP Developer/Practitioner (QSD/QSP) certification (desired).
