Tax Senior Manager, Alternative Investments

As a team member in our Alternative Investments practice, the Tax Senior Manager will assist in providing tax compliance & consulting services to BDO’s Venture Capital, Private Equity, Hedge Fund, and Real Estate clients.

Job Summary

As a team member in our Alternative Investments practice, the Tax Senior Manager will assist in providing tax compliance & consulting services to BDO’s Venture Capital, Private Equity, Hedge Fund, and Real Estate clients.

Job Duties Tax Compliance
  • Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM").
  • Applies understanding of client’s unique circumstances, documentation, and other requirements mandated by law and prepares required filings (tax returns) using a system of review and documentation to ensure full compliance while keeping tax and reporting burdens low.
  • Ensures all data needed to comply with filing requirements are collected; identifies and properly communicates missing items to prepare the return.
  • Utilizes Firm compliance software to maximize efficiency in tax prep process.
  • Effectively teams with Partner, Managers, Tax Seniors, and Associates on completion of project (follow‑up with Open items list).
  • Delivers high quality federal, state, and international tax compliance services.
  • Leads complex engagements with a team of tax professionals.
  • Manages the engagement, including billing, collections, and the budget for projects.
  • Builds and manages client relationships; assists in developing new clients and opportunities.
  • Ensures documents client work and conclusions in the client tax file.
Tax Consulting
  • Identifies, develops, recommends, and implements efficient and effective tax strategies.
  • Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Managing teams of Managers, Tax Seniors, and Associates.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferred.
  • Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.
Experience
  • Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, required.
  • Prior supervisory experience, required.
  • Financial Services industry experience supporting Alternative Investment funds including:
    Venture Capital, Private Equity, Real Estate, and Hedge Funds, preferred.
  • Proficiency in the taxation of partnerships, preferred.
License / Certifications
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or equivalent), required.
  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred.
  • CFP or Masters in Tax, preferred.
Software
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and Adobe Acrobat, preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases, preferred.
  • Proficient in tax compliance process software, preferred.

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
  • Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills as well as decision‑making skills.
  • Capacity to work well in a team environment.
  • Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
  • Ability to compose written tax advice.
  • Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.
Compensation

Individual salaries offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

California Range: $146,000 - $200,000
Colorado Range: $120,000 - $185,000
Illinois Range: $140,000 - $190,000
Maryland Range: $150,000 - $180,000
Massachusetts Range: $150,000 - $206,000
Minnesota Range: $130,000 - $190,000
New Jersey Range: $155,000 - $200,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $190,000 - $225,000
