About the Position
San Francisco Department of Public Health is hiring a permanent Nurse Practitioner (All Specialties) in the Permanent Civil Service.
Role DescriptionUnder general nursing and medical direction, the Nurse Practitioner delivers patient care as part of a multidisciplinary team, performing specialized nurse practitioner duties in clinical settings.
Essential Functions- Provides routine preventative and continuity of care to adult and/or pediatric patients; including complete history and physical examinations.
- Orders diagnostic tests, including laboratory tests, X-rays and other imaging.
- Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty.
- Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients.
- Acute care planning for patients in an inpatient setting.
- Assesses, diagnoses, develops treatment plans, and furnishes medications.
- Counsels and educates patients, collaborating with the healthcare team.
- Consults with physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of unstable and complex patient conditions.
- Documents medical records and adheres to patient privacy.
- Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities.
- Valid California Nurse (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Current medication furnishing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner (AANP, ANCC, Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, NCC, or American Association of Critical Care Nurses).
- License search results show "Current" on
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association.
- Specialization as a Family NP, Adult NP, Adult Gerontology NP, Women’s Health, Acute Care NP, Pediatric NP or Psychiatric Mental Health NP.
- Security clearance from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.
- Furnishing and dispensing number, or ability to pass the credential process within 90 days of hire.
- Certified Medical Examiner by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
- Six (6) months (1,000 hours) as a Health Care provider in a long‑term care facility, skilled nursing facility, or other acute long‑term care setting.
- Six (6) months (1,000 hours) of Occupational Health experience.
- One (1) year (2,000 hours) of experience as a Registered Nurse on a psychiatric inpatient unit, psychiatric emergency service clinic or mental health center.
- One (1) year (2,000 hours) of experience in a setting that treats HIV, AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections.
