The position also supports mixed methods and quantitative projects related to intervention development, including identifying areas of synergy across projects within the Division of Hospital Medicine.

Project focus (custom scope)
  • Support studies examining the impact of increasing financialization of the US healthcare system on clinicians’ ability to provide high-quality, patient-centered serious illness and end-of-life care consistent with ethical and professional standards.
  • Analyze how different forms of financialization affect healthcare, including increased involvement of external financial actors and academic healthcare systems expanding through mergers and acquisitions of hospitals.
  • Contribute to ethnographic projects focused on patients’ and surrogates’ experiences of system-level factors and how these influence decision‑making for serious illness and end‑of‑life care, with attention to administration of potentially non‑beneficial, high‑intensity life‑sustaining treatments near the end of life.
  • Primarily support the three projects above while also assisting ongoing team work, including a community‑based participatory research project on how structural racism impacts serious illness and end‑of‑life care in older Black adults with serious illness.
  • Collaborate with community members in the Bay Area on the community‑based participatory research project.
  • Work with a Community Advisory Board to support analysis of project data.
  • Conduct in‑depth analysis of qualitative interviews collected from hospital staff, clinicians, administrators, and older Black adults with serious illness.
  • Assist with comparative ethnographic and human‑centered design work on systems‑level factors contributing to potentially non‑beneficial, high‑intensity life‑sustaining treatments near the end of life among older adults with and without dementia.
  • Use qualitative methods and human‑centered design to co‑design interventions aimed at mitigating cultures of high‑intensity serious illness and end‑of‑life care.
