Position

Sous Chef at St. Anthony Foundation

Compensation

Base pay range: $52,000 – $62,000 per year. Actual pay based on skills and experience.

Workdays:
Monday–Friday.

Work hours:

5:00 am – 1:30 pm.

Founded in 1950, St. Anthony’s is the most comprehensive safety‑net service center in San Francisco, directly providing food, clothing, medical care, addiction recovery services, access to technology, job training, and other critical resources to the community. The Fr. Alfred Center (FAC) provides a residential recovery program to homeless men who are ready to create sober and stable lives for themselves. The program empowers men with no income or resources through a year‑long, abstinence‑based program, addressing medical, legal, vocational and educational needs. In supporting this program, the Sous Chef assists with the preparation, planning, and serving of three meals a day for a residential facility of 80 men plus staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with the training and supervision of 4 kitchen assistants/dishwashers.
  • Provides timely and regular feedback on staff performance.
  • Ensures staff demonstrate good customer service skills and treat all individuals with dignity and respect.
  • Facilitates team huddles for staff as needed.
  • Completes reports and paperwork neatly, legibly, and thoroughly.
  • Inputs data and information electronically and retrieves reports from the database.
  • Understands and follows organizational programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in regular training and development opportunities.
  • Prepares nutritious, good‑tasting, well‑presented meals for residents of the Father Alfred Center program and staff.
  • Makes the kitchen area clean, including ovens, range, serving line, prep area, walk‑in, equipment and storage areas.
  • Complies with sanitary food‑handling procedures and stock‑rotation systems.
  • Assists with menu development, planning, and ordering.
  • Monitors use of supplies and utilizes donated foods, completing appropriate records.
  • Maintains a safe environment by observing safety procedures and identifying hazards.
  • Participates in relevant meetings to support team communication and program goals.
  • Works collaboratively with others to achieve team success.
  • Manages stress and pressure calmly and responsively.
  • Shows integrity while representing St. Anthony’s.
  • Communicates directly, respectfully, open and honestly with colleagues.
  • Proactively seeks support from team members or management.
  • Demonstrates cooperation with coworkers, management and community.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Culinary degree or equivalent experience; food knowledge and creativity to produce quality menu items.
  • Minimum three years’ experience as a chef.
  • Ability to supervise and train dish‑room staff for kitchen assistant duties.
  • Preferred experience or knowledge of issues affecting chemically‑dependent adults.
  • Excellent supervisory and training skills and a positive team‑member attitude.
  • Knowledge of safe, sanitary food‑handling procedures.
  • Physical ability to move cases and bulk bags, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and perform volume‑cooking tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to set limits and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Capability to respond to emergencies and high‑pressure situations calmly.
  • Requires ability to work non‑traditional hours and days, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to complete paperwork neatly and legibly.
  • Willingness to learn and use computers, smartphones and iPads for information and communication.
  • Ability to remain awake and aware during all scheduled shifts.
  • Responsibility, punctuality, reliability and teamwork.
  • Preferred P.R./First Aid certification; must complete within 3 months of hire.
  • Preferred experience working in a non‑profit or community‑based social service agency dealing with homelessness or poverty.
  • Strong desire to work for a social services agency serving the poor.
  • Second‑language proficiency (Spanish, Mandarin, Tagalog, Cantonese) strongly desired.
