Summary

Responsibilities- Work independently and instruct staff on operating traditionally rigged schooners and square‑rigged sailing vessels.
- Go aloft, rig and handle sails, strike yards and topmasts to deck and send them back aloft.
- Operate the capstan, strike and rig blocks, run rigging, tension standing rigging, and repair or make new running and standing rigging.
- Use traditional skills of worming, parceling, serving, splicing, seizing and tarring.
Frequent heavy physical effort lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects up to 50 pounds, sometimes using the entire body weight. Work near power equipment, in close confined spaces, on decks, masts, yards, booms, scaffolds, ladders and boatswain chairs where footing is unstable.
Working ConditionsInside and outside in all weather types, on ships and docks. Care needed in working with tools and equipment. May work various days/hours, shift work, and operate a motor vehicle as part of duties. Prescribed maintenance uniform and safety equipment required.
Requirements- U.S. Citizenship.
- Appointment subject to background investigation.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements (males).
- Direct Deposit participation, valid driver license, and vehicle record documentation.
- Travel, transportation & relocation expenses not paid; relocation expenses borne by employee.
- Uniform compliance with NPS standards; uniform allowance provided.
- May work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and shift work. Overtime required.
- Age 16‑18 with high‑school equivalency, or enrollment as a student with part‑time work.
- Ability to perform Historic Ship Rigger duties with minimum supervision (screen‑out factor).
- Demonstrated work history performing 19th‑century square‑rigged vessel duties: removal, replacement of rigging and mooring gear; measuring, splicing, serving, seizing, installing new rigging.
- Pattern layout for canvas work; sewing covers, awnings, or other canvas gear using traditional methods.
- Instruction of sub‑journey level riggers in historical seamanship, maintenance, and rigging techniques.

Volunteer ExperienceVolunteer experience through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other community, student, or organizational programs is credited and can provide valuable training applicable to paid employment.
EducationNo substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
