Under general supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs all types of traffic signals and other electronic or electric traffic control device; and programs software for the control of traffic at signalized intersections.
According to the Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Installs, maintains and repairs traffic signal systems including wiring, conduits, traffic signal hardware; intersection controllers; intersection cabinets and their associated components and peripheries; and vehicle and pedestrian detection systems.
2. Programs engineering timing data into intersection controllers and other devices associated with the movement or control of traffic operations.
3. Responds to emergency field complaints to locate causes of malfunction of signal devices or associated equipment including wiring or conduit damage; repairs or replaces faulty electronic or electrical equipment.
4. Operates and maintains various electronic and electric measuring and testing devices such as voltmeters, ammeters and multi-testers to troubleshoot and repair signals, signal components and related signal equipment.
5. Evaluates electrical and electronic portions of traffic signal equipment upon receipt from manufacturer; assesses errors in manufacture or construction that impede proper operation of equipment and recommends corrective action.
6. Prepares and maintains accurate reports and records such as complaint forms, material lists, daily work reports, engineering work order requests, and time sheets.
7. Performs bench work including testing, fault finding and repairing of signal relay panels, vehicle and pedestrian detection components, and various electronic and electrical components and equipment associated with traffic signal operations; and repairs or replaces parts as necessary.
8. May provide training to other Traffic Signal Electricians on specialized electrical and electronic components, software, or equipment associated with traffic operations.
9. Installs and maintains the City's traffic coordination system including but not limited to 12C cable, two pair cable and fiber optics.
10. Performs related duties as assigned.
Nature of work:The performance of the essential functions of the class require working on energized equipment, around loud noise and construction equipment; standing, walking on level and uneven surfaces, kneeling, squatting, and stooping in the performance of installation and inspection duties. These duties also require the incumbent to climb in and out of a boom bucket and balance while working at a height of a maximum of 40 feet.
During the performance of duties, the incumbent will regularly be required to push weights in excess of 60 pounds and lift equipment that weighs over 50 pounds.
The incumbent is daily exposed to electrical hazards; installation and repair work is performed near moving traffic in all weather conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces. Incumbent may be required to work in all weather conditions and may be subject to stand-by duties and mandatory overtime as assigned on a 24 hour per day basis.
1a.Completion of a recognized Electrician Apprenticeship program (Inside Wireman Apprenticeship program) and one (1) year of journey-level electrician experience;
OR
1b.Six (6) years of verifiable inside wireman experience equivalent to journey-level as defined by the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers;
AND
2.Possession of a current valid Class C driver license at the time of appointment
