Position: Assistant Program Director, Compass Housing Location Services

About the Organization:

Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team:

The Compass Housing Location Services (CHLS) team empowers San Francisco families to find safe, stable, affordable housing. Families receive assistance with housing search, including support with unit viewings, landlord advocacy, application submission, denial appeal, and move-in costs. CHLS serves families in existing Compass subsidy programs (C-Home and C-Cares) as well as those outside the traditional homelessness response system.

Schedule:

Monday - Friday, primarily during standard business hours

Compensation:

$70K - $80K annually

Location:

1061 Market St., San Francisco. Fully in-person.

Responsibilities:
  • Directly supervise a team of Housing Coordinators and Housing Locators responsible for assessing families for services, hosting drop-in sessions and workshops, and helping families search and apply for housing in the private rental market.
  • Onboard and train new Housing Coordinators and Housing Locators
  • Conduct weekly supervision meetings with Housing Coordinators and Housing Locators to review progress, provide support and direction, resolve challenges, and ensure high quality job performance.
  • Support the professional development of Housing Coordinators and Housing Locators with training, professional development planning, and annual performance reviews.
  • Assign new clients, manage caseloads, and strategize with Housing Coordinators and Housing Locators around challenging situations.
  • Oversee the schedules of Housing Coordinators and Housing Locators, including time in the community and on remote day.
  • Support Housing Coordinators in designing workshops and developing assessment materials.
  • Ensure all leased units meets program requirements by reviewing each unit identified by Housing Locators and approving only eligible units for lease-up.
  • Ensure each family leases up within the required housing search timeline.
  • Manage shallow subsidy disbursements for housed clients
  • Ensure excellent data quality standards and record keeping. Conduct regular file audits to ensure client files and data stay up to date.
  • Approve and facilitate check requests from Housing Locators to ensure landlords are paid for lease-up costs in a timely manner.
  • Develop relationships with local landlords, funders and other key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director on staff hiring and training.
  • Function as acting director in the Program Director’s absence.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Fluency in Spanish desired, but not required.
  • Required: at least three years of direct experience as a case manager or counselor working with people who have experienced homelessness and/or other significant trauma.
  • Required: valid CA driver’s license and ability to be approved as a Zipcar driver.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide support in a crisis, and to de‑escale potentially volatile situations.
  • Deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging throughout a complex and dynamic organization.
