HCI & ML Research Engineer — Shape AI Interaction

What you will be working on:

• Designing and experimenting with novel interaction modes for Claude across various product surfaces, including mobile and desktop apps

• Developing appropriate fine-tuning methods to seamlessly integrate interaction modes into Claude's natural language processing capabilities

• Conducting user research on claude.ai customers to gain insights from real-world usage patterns and inform design decisions

• Collaborating with product engineering and design teams to implement new interaction modes into production

You may be a good fit if you:

• Possess exceptional front-end software engineering skills, with proficiency in technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js)

• Are proficient in Python programming and have experience developing software that utilizes large language models like Claude

• Have some experience with fine-tuning large language models or other machine learning techniques (we’ll teach you - we don’t need you to be an expert!)

• Have a user-centric approach and a keen interest in understanding user behavior and needs

• Are results-oriented, with a bias towards flexibility and impact

• Enjoy collaborating with cross-functional teams, including researchers, engineers, and designers

• Care about the societal impacts of your work and strive to create inclusive and accessible AI experiences

• Have excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong candidates will also have experience with:

• Have a background in HCI, UI/UX design, or a related field

• Designing and conducting user research studies to evaluate interaction modes and gather feedback

• Developing interactive prototypes or proof-of-concepts to test and iterate on new interaction ideas

• Collaborating with product teams to quickly prototype and deliver innovative solutions

• Staying up-to-date with the latest research and trends in HCI, AI interaction design, and natural language interfaces

The expected salary range for this position is:

Annual Salary:

$315,000—$510,000 USD

Logistics

Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
