As Payroll Manager, you will be the strategic and operational owner of weekly multistate, union, and non-union payroll for our field and office teams. Reporting to the Controller, you will lead a seasoned payroll staff, drive the transition from Sage to Miter, and serve as the go-to expert for payroll accounting, tax compliance, and audits. Your work will keep our people paid accurately, our books closed on time, and our controls audit-ready, fueling projects that build hospitals, data centers, and civic landmarks across the western U.S.
Responsibilities- Direct weekly payroll processing for 500+ union and non-union employees, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Own payroll general-ledger reconciliations and prepare month-end / year-end journal entries
- Design and maintain internal controls, approval workflows, and audit documentation
- Oversee multistate and local payroll tax filings, W-2s, and notice resolution
- Lead the payroll system conversion, plan, test, and train users for a seamless go-live
- Coach, mentor, and develop a high-performing payroll team focused on service and accountability
- 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, with 3+ in a leadership role
- Demonstrated strength in payroll accounting and GL reconciliation
- Track record managing high-volume, deadline-driven, multistate payrolls
- Expertise in payroll controls, audits, and corrective action planning
- Advanced Excel skills plus proficiency with major payroll/ERP systems; system-conversion experience a strong plus
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field and/or CPP certification preferred
