Position Overview

Seeking a hands-on Accounting Manager to lead day-to-day accounting for a residential construction and design-build business.

This role places a strong emphasis on construction accounting, job costing, and work-in-progress (WIP). Financial reporting remains part of the position, with greater emphasis on accurate project accounting and daily execution.

The ideal candidate enjoys working directly in the details while partnering with project managers and leadership to understand project costs, profitability, and cash flow.

Responsibilities

Prepare, maintain, and reconcile WIP schedules, reviewing project budgets, costs incurred, estimated costs to complete, and projected profitability.

Work with project managers to validate cost-to-complete estimates and identify cost overruns, margin changes, and discrepancies.

Maintain accurate job costing, including labor, materials, subcontractor costs, commitments, and change orders.

Track contract values, approved and pending change orders, project billings, and collections.

Review over billings, under billings, and revenue recognition in accordance with applicable accounting policies.

Manage daily accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger maintenance, and reconciliations.

Complete month-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations.

Review subcontractor and vendor invoices for proper coding, approvals, and supporting documentation.

Monitor cash flow, payment schedules, and outstanding receivables.

Prepare routine financial statements and project-level reports for management.

Coordinate with outside accounting and tax professionals as needed.

Improve accounting processes, controls, and the accuracy of project data.

Provide guidance to accounting staff while remaining directly involved in the work.

Qualifications

Strong construction accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of WIP schedules and job costing.

Experience reviewing project budgets, cost-to-complete estimates, change orders, and project profitability.

Ability to independently manage month-end close and day-to-day accounting.

Working knowledge of construction revenue recognition, over billings, and under billings.

Strong Excel skills and experience with construction accounting software.

Ability to communicate clearly with project managers, field teams, and leadership.

Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable resolving discrepancies directly.

Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

Residential/Commercial construction or design-build experience preferred.

Ideal Background

A construction Accounting Manager or Senior Accountant ready to take ownership of the accounting function.

A practical, hands-on professional with strong WIP and job-costing skills who enjoys staying close to project operations.
