Job SummaryLewis and Tibbitts, Inc. is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Superintendent to serve as a critical on-site leader for our underground utility construction projects. Reporting directly to the General Superintendent, this role is responsible for the daily planning, coordination, and direct supervision of all field operations for a specific project or designated section of a larger project. The Superintendent ensures that work is performed safely, efficiently, to the highest quality standards, and in strict adherence to project plans and schedules.
This position demands a hands-on leader who can effectively manage crews, equipment, and materials, foster a productive work environment, and relentlessly uphold Lewis and Tibbitts, Inc.'s paramount safety culture, with a strong focus on preventing serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) in every task performed.
- Direct Supervision: Provide direct, hands-on supervision and leadership to Lewis and Tibbitts, Inc. field crews, foremen, and on-site subcontractors. Effectively delegate tasks, assign responsibilities, and ensure efficient workflow on a daily basis.
- Work Planning & Execution: Develop and implement daily and weekly work plans, ensuring alignment with the overall project schedule provided by the Project Manager/General Superintendent. Oversee the execution of all underground construction activities, including excavation, trenching, shoring, piping, back filling, compaction, and restoration.
- Productivity Management: Continuously monitor and manage crew productivity, identifying inefficiencies and implementing immediate corrective actions to optimize performance and adhere to budget.
- Problem Solving: Proactively identify and resolve day-to-day operational issues and challenges that arise in the field, collaborating with the General Superintendent or Project Manager as needed for complex problems.
- Quality Control: Directly oversee and inspect all work performed by crews and subcontractors to ensure it meets Lewis and Tibbitts, Inc.'s stringent quality standards, engineering specifications, and local code requirements. Address any deficiencies promptly.

- Safety Leadership & Enforcement: Serve as the primary safety leader on your assigned project/area. Strictly enforce all Lewis and Tibbitts, Inc. safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (OSHA,
Cal/OSHA
), with particular vigilance for critical risks with SIF potential

Lead by example, consistently demonstrating safe work practices and the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). - Daily Safety Briefings: Conduct and document daily safety meetings (e.g., toolbox talks, pre-task planning) with all crews, specifically discussing critical hazards, SIF prevention strategies
, mitigation measures, and emergency procedures. - Hazard Identification & Mitigation: Continuously monitor site conditions for potential hazards specific to underground construction (e.g., trench stability, traffic control, utility strikes, confined spaces, heavy equipment proximity).
Focus on identifying and mitigating high-potential risks that could lead to SIFs. Implement immediate corrective actions and ensure all safety protocols are followed. - Permit Compliance: Ensure all required permits (e.g., excavation permits, confined space entry permits) are in place, understood, and adhered to before work commences.
- Incident Response & Reporting: In the event of an incident or near-miss, ensure immediate response, proper documentation, and secure the scene. Participate actively in preliminary incident investigations, with a focus on identifying SIF precursors and root causes of high-potential events

- Labor Management: Manage daily manpower requirements, ensuring crews are adequately staffed and skilled for assigned tasks. Approve timecards and manage crew rotations as directed.
