Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Project Supervisor, the Carpenter performs the full range of skilled journey-level carpentry work to construct, remodel, maintain, and repair university facilities and structures. Work includes reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications; installing and repairing drywall, flooring, roofing, windows, doors, and cabinetry; building and repairing furniture, frames, and partitions; and inspecting work for compliance with specifications, building codes, and safety regulations.

The Carpenter estimates materials, time, and costs; maintains tools and equipment; ensures job site safety; and records work activities in the computerized maintenance management system.

This position may work independently or as part of a team, consulting and coordinating with other trade workers and campus units to complete assignments efficiently. The Carpenter participates in the maintenance and operation of the Carpentry Shop and may provide work direction to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as lead and asbestos and requires adherence to safety protocols and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

* Perform journey-level carpentry work in constructing, remodeling, maintaining, and repairing campus buildings and facilities.

* Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, and specifications.

* Install, build, and repair structural woodwork, drywall, ceilings, flooring, cabinetry, doors, windows, and roofs.

* Estimate time, materials, and labor required for projects.

* Operate hand and power tools, scissor lifts, forklifts, and other trade equipment safely and effectively.

* Maintain and repair tools and equipment; ensure a clean, safe work environment.

* Use the computerized maintenance management system to document and track work orders.

* Inspect work for conformance with codes, specifications, and safety standards.

* Provide instruction and guidance to semi-skilled and unskilled assistants.

* Collaborate with other trades and departments to complete projects efficiently.

* Respond promptly to urgent repair needs and emergencies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in rough and finish carpentry.

* Knowledge of state and local building codes, safety orders, and regulations related to carpentry work.

* Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and drawings.

* Ability to make accurate estimates of materials, time, and cost for projects.

* Ability to build, install, and repair structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings, and cabinetry.

* Skill in operating hand and power tools safely.

* Ability to maintain records and prepare standard reports.

* Ability to provide work direction to others and work effectively as part of a team.

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work harmoniously with diverse individuals.

* Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and changing priorities.

* Commitment to safety and sustainability principles in daily operations.

Required Qualifications

* Abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter's apprenticeship program.

* Possession of a valid California Driver's License and driving record that allows for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position.

* Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations.

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

* Thorough knowledge of the carpentry trade

* Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program in the carpentry trades.

* Possession of a current California asbestos worker certification.

* Possession of a current California lead worker certification.

* Experience in the maintenance of a State facility, College or University or other commercial, multi-facility complex.

* Four years of journey-level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction related to carpentry.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,274/month - $7,498/month

CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month
