The Irrigation Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, designing, and operating irrigation systems to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable watering for all landscaped areas. This position also supports general grounds maintenance and landscaping activities to uphold the county’s appearance and environmental standards.
Responsibilities- Inspects, maintains, and repairs all irrigation systems including pipes, pumps, solenoid valves, sprinkler heads, and drip systems.
- Designs, installs, and modifies irrigation systems for new or renovated landscapes or facilities.
- Troubleshoots and repairs computerized electronic systems, irrigation controllers, and pump stations.
- Develops and manages irrigation schedules, adjusting for weather, water needs, and conservation goals.
- Maintains electronic and physical records of system designs, programming, and as-built documentation.
- Operates heavy equipment such as trenchers, backhoes, and tractors for irrigation system installation and repair.
- Provides training or guidance to staff on minor irrigation repairs and maintenance practices.
- Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and work areas to ensure safe operation.
- May perform other general grounds keeping duties including planting, pruning, fertilizing, pest control, mowing, and weed management.
- May work after-hours, weekends, or holidays, as needed and responds to work-related emergencies.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years’ experience in irrigation system installation, repair, and maintenance. Experience with landscape maintenance, water conservation, and irrigation scheduling.
- Irrigation license preferred.
- Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.
- Knowledge of irrigation and grounds maintenance equipment, systems, and best practices.
- Ability to design and interpret irrigation schematics and blueprints.
- Strong understanding of safe work practices and environmental regulations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
