Position: Summer Playgrounds Senior Recreation Leader (2026)

SUMMER PLAYGROUNDS SENIOR RECREATION LEADER (CSS III)

The City of Davis Parks & Community Services Department offers various summer programs for youth, 6 to 12 years of age. These programs include Rainbow Summer, Summer Quest, Arts & Crafts Camp, Kids in the Kitchen, Kinder Camp and PM Kids Club. The Senior Recreation Leader position is responsible ensuring a fun-filled, safe, structured and comfortable environment for all. This position plans, oversees and evaluates all camp related activities, including supervision of camp staff and volunteers, youth participants and camp activities.

Hours

Must be available to work Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. (schedules vary) from June through August, attend Monday and Tuesday evening staff meetings during the summer dates, and participate in mandatory trainings at the beginning of June.

Wages

Community Services Specialist III - $17.83 - $18.73 per hour (based upon experience)

Status

Temporary part time. Applicants will be screened according to experience relevant to this position. Those most qualified will be invited to an individual or small group interview.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises, schedules, motivates, evaluates and leads program staff and volunteers.
  • Plans and coordinates special events, trips and camp activities.
  • Directs arts and crafts activities, sports, games, drama, music, dance and other program related activities.
  • Communicates with parents on a daily basis regarding participant behavior, injuries and other relevant matters.
  • Renders first aid as necessary.
  • Attends weekly Senior Recreation Leader meetings and Tuesday night staff meetings during the weeks of camp.
  • Attends and facilitates weekly volunteer meetings as needed.
  • Assures equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained.
  • Keeps work environments clean and organized.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other program staff and community members.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years or older or have education equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Certified in CPR and Standard First Aid prior to the start of the summer camp program.
  • Ability to direct and delegate assigned tasks to subordinate staff as needed.
  • Ability to swim at a level considered water safe and be comfortable participating in pool activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate energy, enthusiasm and creativity in the job position.
  • Ability to motivate and lead staff, volunteers and youth participants.
  • Having knowledge of recreation activities, child development, behavior management practices, staff supervision techniques and community resources is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with program participants, parents and co-workers.
  • Must be able to complete a list of other required online trainings prior to the start of the program, including but not limited to, Sports Concussion and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Protocols, Mandated Reporter, Sexual Discrimination and Harassment, etc.
Experience and Training

Must have a minimum of two years of experience working in youth programs and supervising others, or an equivalent setting. Advanced education in recreation administration or similar coursework may substitute for a portion of the required work experience.

Staff should be prepared to work outdoors, in various environmental conditions each week. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.;

Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, pollens and slip hazards when near water. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens…
