GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, operates various types grinding machines to remove parting lines, fins, snags, gates, risers, and other undesirable metal from castings in accordance with quality standards. Ensures that documentation, tooling and parts are correctly matched to paperwork.
OBJECTIVETo set up and operate various grinding machines to remove any metal necessary to meet visual and dimensional specifications on technique cards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Follow established housekeeping and safety practices.
- Must demonstrate ability to complete all departmental paperwork in fine detail and explain the logic of all phases.
- Demonstrate ability to log on main computer system, extract information, log time, enter inventory amount and forward to next operation.
- Perform visual and dimensional inspection of castings per part grade levels.
- Selects and mounts proper belts for grinders, as required for operation. Operates various types of grinding equipment.
- Interact with qualified welders to replace missing metal – according to OPC’s and QCP’s.
- Adjusts equipment to obtain optimum running condition, being mindful of alloy cross contamination.
- Inspect own parts for surface finish, distortion and imperfections such as scratches, uneven surface, non-consistent curvature, or other non-acceptable condition.
- Maintains accurate records of work performed, meets all production and quality standards.
- Looks up location of grinding fixtures and makes small handheld fixtures if none available.
- Demonstrate capability to grind contours to tolerances of +/ 0.005 inch, and blend gate traces, welds, or plus metal so that castings meet Tech Card RMS requirements.
- Must demonstrate cooperation when assistance is needed by management and possess the ability to train incoming personnel and basically run the department efficiently with minimal outside assistance.
- Possess eye to hand coordination to perform grinding operation to within .005 inch on all surfaces.
- Have a zero-scrap rate (parts that cannot be reworked) and a rework rate of less than 2.5 percent and a production rate average of at least 700 parts per day.
- Must be able to determine if a grinding belt, after extended use, is still serviceable for other shop numbers or machine grinding operations.
- Consistently notifies the supervisor immediately when the workload is low.
- Displays a willingness and interest to learn through on the job training.
- Knows and understands all department safety and general plant rules and policies.
- Demonstrate ability to recognize and communicate production problems to your supervisor.
- Demonstrate safe and efficient handling of all tools, dies, equipment and forklift, as applicable, to prevent damage.
- Performs all other duties assigned.

- Specialized training in caustic metals, respirators, and training.
- Training is on the job and may be documented by Verbal, Written, or Practical Testing.
- Experience and/or training are included in considerations.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, read, follows and interprets instructions on technique cards, code sheets as well as other verbal or written instructions.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to use simple to moderately complex measuring devices and fixtures.
